Before Jesus ascended onto His Father, He promised His disciples that He would send them the Comforter, the blessed Holy Spirit (John 15:26). It was ten days after His ascension, on the day of Pentecost, that the Lord fulfilled His promise. John the Baptist preached the baptism of repentance but promised the believers that, “The one who comes after me "will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire" (Luke 3:16). So, it is believed that at about 9:00 a.m. on the day of Pentecost while the disciples were gathered together in the upper room praying, "a sound came from heaven like a rush of mighty wind and there appeared to them tongues as of fire, distributed and resting on each one of them.
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance" (Acts 2:2-4).
During this time, there were devout men from all walks of like dwelling in Jerusalem. At the sound, the multitude came together in bewilderment because they each heard their own native tongue spoken and they were puzzled saying “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own language? Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians—we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.” And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” But others mocking said, “They are filled with new wine” (Acts 2:5-13, ESV).
Afterwards, Peter preached a sermon informing them that, "This is what was spoken by the prophet Joel, “And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions and your old men shall dream dreams'" (Acts 2:16-17).
What Peter was actually teaching them was that the last days are finally here. Jesus Christ, the Messiah came and redeemed us on Calvary’s cross. He rose from the dead, and is now alive seated in heavenly places at the right hand of God the Father.
The interval before Jesus Christ return in His power and great glory will be quite noticeable by an unparalleled outpouring of the Holy Spirit on all flesh in every geographic region. The outpouring will not be determined by a person’s complexion, religion or a denomination’s luke-warmness. There’ll be no limits! No boundaries! God’s children must indeed be born again just like what Christ spoke of to Nicodemus (John 3:1-8). Kingdom citizens must be born of the Holy Spirit of God by becoming filled with the Holy Spirit; that is they ought to be full of the Spirit of God, and be empowered by Him in order to accomplish the greater works, which is to be done.
Indeed, these are the latter days that Isaiah (44:3) Ezekiel (11:19; 36:26f.; 39:29) and Joel (2:28) prophesied and had yearned for. The days of Pentecost are not over. Until now, many people are being baptized in the Holy Spirit universally. The promised Day of Pentecost has indeed piloted in global mission, which remains with us now.
According to Stewart (n.d.) “Pentecost was also the birthday of the church. The Old Testament period of law was concluded and a new era began. Those who believe in Jesus as Messiah during this present age become part of the body of Christ known as the church. The church age began at Pentecost and will conclude when Christ comes back for His own.”
Let us go ye theretofore and teach all nations about the wonderful love of Jesus Christ, our Messiah and soon coming King. Pentecost was about Jesus and continues to be about Him because the new covenant is all about Christ and what He has done for us to bring together “one new humanity” the heavenly eschatological church. We now await the “mighty fiery revival” that will be coming!
